What?
Cointemporary is an artist run and curated online platform showcasing artworks by interna- tional contemporary artists. The platform is dedicated to one artwork for a period of 7 days. Immediately after the end of each cycle, or when an artwork is sold, a new work by a different artist will automatically appear. A work on display can be purchased in Bitcoin (BTC) only.
Who & Why?
Artists Andy Boot and Valentin Ruhry run Cointemporary. The website features one artwork curated by Boot/Ruhry, and occasionally other invited curators and artists. Coinfinity.co is the site’s technical consultant.
Cointemporary resembles traditional galleries in its dedication to one artist and limited ex- hibition time, but the goal is to place the artist’s work in a broader global visual context free from the hegemonic monetary system in which contemporary art is embedded. Cointemporary establishes a platform for showcasing contemporary artistic practice and tendencies and aims to stimulate discussion beyond typical art world rhetoric. This is the reason why BTC func- tions as the only payment method; the ongoing discussion of the intrinsic value of this new currency and its high volatility disables the current basis of valuation in the art market. Bitcoin represents a decentralized online payment network and a new form of autonomy in the global monetary system, which does not yet exist in a similar fashion in the art world.
How?
Those who run the site, perhaps in consultation with others, select the artwork to be exhibited on Cointemporary. The work will be documented for online presentation. All parties involved (artists, galleries, etc.) will enter into a contractual agreement to have the artwork available to sell for a certain amount of time under specific conditions. The works can be purchased for Bitcoin only.
