Women’s Soccer
The USA faces Sweden, who has not looked that great, with one victory 1-0 over South Africa and only two goals scored in the tournament.
The game to watch out for is Canada vs. France. With a win over Germany, Canada and top goal scorer Janine Beckie (3 goals) has shown that they are a force to be dealt with, and face the tough team: France. If Canada wins against France, I wouldn’t be surprised for them to have the momentum to make it to the final. Even though Germany lost to Canada on paper, they have been the most efficient offensive team thus far, having scored eight goals compared to the average of 4.5 goals.
My two quarterfinals picks are: Canada Draw, no bet 3.830 over France and Germany vs. China over 2.5 goals 1.78
Men’s Discus
There are three top Discus throwers this year that are not new to the spotlight: Robert Harting (Germany), Piotr Malachowski (Poland), and Philip Milanov (Belgium).
Piotr is the current world leader with a throw of 68.10m. He won the championship last year, but Harting was not able to attend.
Harting, who is known for his victory celebrations, is one of four people with throws over 68m this year. Harting has accepted his underdog role, saying, “I have to accept that I am no longer the hunted, now I am the hunter, but I like that.”
Milianov, a Silver medalist in the Bejing games, finished second to Malachowski at Doha in the IAAF Dimond League.
This is a tough one, but if I had to pick I would lean towards Harting 2.35
Men’s 100m
Can Usain Bolt (Jamaica) be the first man to win three back to back 100m titles? He seems to be relaxed enough to show us his samba skills at the press conference. However, he did have a grade 1 hamstring tear and pulled out of the Olympic Trials. He is still the favorite at the sportsbooks at between 1.50 and 1.60 to win.
Justin Gatlin(USA) is an underdog at 2.75. Bolt and Gatlin have an ongoing rivalry, making this race about more than just getting a better time. Bolt calls Gatlin “Old Man” and likes to make fun of his grey hair. Gatlin comes back calling Bolt “Middle Aged Man” and says “But I say it’s not gray—it’s my wisdom.” These two have been racing against each other for over a decade. This is one of those classic sports battles.
Given Bolt’s recent injury I am going to lean towards Gatlin at 2.75 for the upset.
