In December, Next Earth donated 330 BNB (approximately $204,000 USD) to environmental causes via a community-based DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization). This is the latest in a series of monthly donations that began in August, with the birth of the Initial Tile Offering. 10% of all land purchases on the Next Earth platform are donated to charity, with landowners voting to determine which charities receive funding.
The four beneficiaries of December’s donation were Amazon Watch (receiving 215 votes and correspondingly 86.84 BNB), Kiss the Ground (receiving 56 votes and correspondingly 22.62 BNB), SEE Turtles (receiving 53 votes and correspondingly 21.41 BNB), and The Ocean Cleanup (receiving 493 votes and correspondingly 199.13 BNB). These groups were chosen based on their commitment to environmental causes, with the allocation determined by the community.
The Next Earth platform is built on the Binance Smart Chain blockchain and uses NFTs (non-fungible tokens) to represent virtual land tiles. Landowners can buy, sell, or even draw art on their property, with all transactions recorded on the blockchain. This makes Next Earth an ideal platform for building sustainable communities, as it provides a secure and transparent way to track ownership and usage rights. Next Earth is currently migrating to the Polygon network to further reduce gas fees, increase stability and accessibility.
Next Earth has already made significant contributions to environmental causes, having donated hundreds of thousands of dollars since its launch in August 2021. With continued growth in both its user base and charitable donations, Next Earth looks poised to make a real difference in the fight against climate change.
The Four Charities
The Ocean Cleanup is a Dutch foundation that develops advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. The organization was founded by Boyan Slat, a then-16-year-old who became inspired to act after a diving trip in Greece where he saw more plastic bags than fish.
Since its inception in 2013, The Ocean Cleanup has raised over $31.5 million in funding and has deployed several cleanup systems into the ocean. In November, The Ocean Cleanup was the recipient of Next Earth’s largest single donation to date.
Amazon Watch is a nonprofit organization that works to protect the rainforest and defend the rights of indigenous people in the Amazon Basin. The group was founded in 1996 by environmental activist, strategist, and media professional Atossa Soltani.
Since its inception, Amazon Watch has helped protect millions of acres of rainforest and secured land rights for indigenous people. In November, Amazon Watch was the second-largest recipient of donations from Next Earth LLC, receiving nearly 87 BNB.
Kiss the Ground is a nonprofit organization that aims to fight climate change by promoting sustainable agriculture practices. The organization’s similarly named film was co-founded in 2013 by Ryland Engelhart. The film won many awards, including the DOC LA Award for Best Documentary, as well as Best Documentary of the Year, Best Interactive Documentary, and Outstanding Achievement in Documentary Editing, Archival Usage & Assembly at the London International Film Festival.
SEE Turtles is an international non-profit working to ensure the future of sea turtles through conservation research, education programs, and public awareness campaigns. The group was founded in 2008 and has since grown into a global organization.
SEE Turtles is best known for its work in sea turtle conservation trips, its inclusivity fund, plastic removal campaigns, and sea turtle education. They’ve saved over 4 million hatchlings to date and support over 30 important nesting beach projects.
Why Next Earth Supports Charities
Next Earth supports charities because it believes that the fight against climate change requires a collaborative effort from all parts of society. Climate change is a complex problem that can only be solved through collective action.
In addition, Next Earth believes that the private sector has a key role to play in the fight against climate change. Businesses must lead the way in developing new technologies and sustainable practices if we are to have any hope of halting global warming.
