Blockchain is rapidly gaining in popularity as a technology that has the potential to change many industries. Europe has been striving to lead the blockchain revolution with the help of various businesses and educational organizations – organisations such as the University of Nicosia (UNIC).
UNIC has positioned itself as one of the most influential organizations facilitating a blockchain revolution. The university has been very supportive of blockchain technology in Europe and is also the only university in the world to offer an MSc in Digital Currencies. Antonis Polemitis and Andreas Antonopoulos teach the digital currencies course at UNIC in Cyprus. The course aims to educate about blockchain, particularly how it works, and its application in many industries. UNIC is, therefore, determined to lead the blockchain revolution through blockchain education.
A brighter future through blockchain education
The university also organizes Decentralized, a popular yearly blockchain conference taking place in Athens next month.
“Decentralized is the largest and most in-depth event of its kind in Europe focused on the business and political implications of blockchain technologies. This year it will feature over 1200 attendees and more than 70 world-renowned industry leaders from the Blockchain Industry,” stated UNIC’s head of Blockchain Marketing Initiative, Milton George.
Some of the industry leaders present will include; fintech expert Spyros Margaris and Jameson Lopp. European Parliament member Eva Kaili and Blockchain’s head of research Garrick Hileman will also attend the event. Their goal is to make sure Decentralized becomes the leading international blockchain conference with events taking place in different locations all over the world.
Blockchain events are becoming more popular
The number of blockchain events taking place globally is on the rise, not only in Cyprus but all over the world. However, Europe is fundamental in its progress. This has a lot to do with the regulatory and economic climate. For example, Malta’s government has been very supportive of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. Whilst Limassol Cyprus is fast becoming a financial hub with hundreds of forex and crypto companies based in the town.
Governmental support has encouraged blockchain startups to set up shop within its borders, and as such, there are many blockchain players in Cyprus. It also means that there is a considerable audience in the region. Limassol regularly hosts seminars and events with blockchain an ever-growing focus. Discussions have been centred around creating high-quality educational content and the negativity that still exists around digital currencies. For example, in the wake of several ICO scams, leading social media channels banned cryptocurrency and blockchain related ads. This was counterproductive to spreading high-quality education on blockchain technology and innovations.
Integrating blockchain education into the curriculum
Blockchain is promising, and as such, it is essential to include it in school curriculums to educate students. The University of Nicosia has incorporated blockchain technology as a unit in its Computer Science course. The first course in the degree, DFIN-511: Introduction to Digital Currencies, is offered for free as an open enrollment MOOC course to anyone interested in learning about the fundamental principles of digital currency. It is taught by renowned Bitcoin experts Andreas Antonopoulos and Antonis Polemitis and includes 12 live online sessions.
