In a significant law enforcement operation, the Australian police have dismantled an organized crime syndicate believed to be behind a series of commercial burglaries across Melbourne’s northwest, specifically targeting crypto ATMs and collectible card stores.
Over the past week, detectives from the North West Metro Regional Crime Squad arrested four individuals as part of their ongoing investigation into these crimes, which have escalated since mid-January.
Burglaries Targeting Crypto ATMs And Card Stores
The syndicate is alleged to have stolen six crypto ATMs from various businesses located in Hoppers Crossing, Bentleigh, Brunswick, Werribee, and Vermont.
Additionally, the group is suspected of executing a string of burglaries at collectible card stores in Epping, Moonee Ponds, and Eumemmerring.
Detectives believe the offenders utilized stolen vehicles to carry out their illicit activities, highlighting the organized nature of the crimes.
As the investigation progressed, police uncovered a trove of stolen items, valued at approximately $50,000, which included a range of collectible trading cards from popular franchises such as Pokémon, Disney Lorcana, Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic the Gathering, Dragon Ball Z, AFL, and NBA.
The operation involved executing search warrants across several Melbourne suburbs, including Reservoir, Coburg North, Greensborough, and South Morang.
During these searches, police seized not only the collectible cards but also five alleged stolen firearms, around 100 stolen car keys, ammunition, a pill press machine, and various stolen power tools.
Two Key Suspects Arrested
Among those arrested were two primary suspects: a 37-year-old man from Reservoir and a 32-year-old man from Epping. The Reservoir man faces serious charges, including 14 counts of burglary related to the thefts of crypto ATMs and commercial game stores, as well as multiple firearm-related offenses. He has been remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on May 2.
The Epping man has been charged with five counts of commercial burglary, theft of motor vehicles, and possession of methamphetamine, among other offenses, and is scheduled to appear in court on February 21. Two additional suspects, aged 33 and 46, were released pending further investigation.
Detective Inspector Patrick Watkinson of the North West Metro Regional Crime Squad praised the operation’s success, crediting the vigilance of the trading card community and the support from industry partners for aiding in the dismantling of this significant network of offenders.
He expressed confidence that the main perpetrators have been apprehended and emphasized the police’s ongoing commitment to targeting the broader network of organized crime, including the Middle Eastern Organized Crime Syndicates believed to be involved.
Watkinson’s remarks conveyed a strong message to those engaged in organized crime, warning that the law enforcement efforts will continue to intensify. He stated, “Your luck will eventually run out.”
