Peter Thiel Invests in a New ‘Proactive’ Cryptocurrency Investment Platform

The cryptocurrency investment and infrastructure platform Layer1 has successfully closed a $2.1 million seed funding round. Investors who took part include PayPal’s co-founder Peter Thiel and Barry Silbert’s Digital Currency Group. 

Layer1 Raises $2.1M With Help From Peter Thiel

Despite the prolonged bear market of 2018, cryptocurrency investment platform Layer1 led by Alexander Liegl has managed to successfully secure $2.1 in initial seed funding.

According to the official release, the funding round included prominent investors such as Barry Silbert’s Digital Currency Group and PayPal’s co-founder Peter Thiel. Bitcoinist recently reported that Thiel also invested in a new startup which helps large investors trade bitcoin.

Speaking on the matter was Travis Scher, VP Investments at Digital Currency Group, who noted:

We believe there is huge potential for a hands-on, mission-driven investor to take a concentrated position in a single cryptocurrency, and then dedicate talent and resources to significantly accelerate its development.

A Proactive Approach

Unlike typical crypto asset investment platforms, Layer1 takes a fairly different approach. The company takes a long-term position in certain digital assets, which bring promising technologies and network effects.

Then, Layer1 deploys its own capital and resources with an intention of improving the fundamental value of the asset they’ve invested in and support further market adoption. Reportedly, Layer1 is currently involved with a privacy coin known as Grin and, as such, it intends to build integral technology to further its growth.
