Yesterday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve alongside a U.S. Digital Asset Stockpile. This move separates Bitcoin ($BTC) from other cryptocurrencies, positioning it in a distinct category while other digital assets will form the broader national stockpile.
The $BTC in the reserve will come from Bitcoins forfeited by the Department of Treasury. The executive order further clarified that the country won’t sell $BTCs in the reserve but will rather be ‘maintained as a store of reserve assets’. Currently, the US owns over 198K $BTC worth about $17B.
Meanwhile, the stockpile will be composed of other cryptocurrencies also forfeited by the Department of Treasury. The executive order didn’t specify which cryptocurrencies will be included in the stockpile but it’s understood it excludes some previously mentioned by Trump.
As a result, the prices of XRP ($XRP), Solana ($SOL), and Cardano ($ADA) saw a steep decline over the past 24 hours.
