Litecoin
Litecoin was born as a spinoff from Bitcoin in 2011. At the time it was touted to be a lighter, faster version of its big brother. Today LTC is often referred to as the digital silver to Bitcoin’s gold. The peer to peer open source internet currency was spawned by Google employee and former engineering director at Coinbase, Charlie Lee. Technically Litecoin has a lower block generation time and different proof of work hashing algorithm using scrypt instead of SHA-256. Blocks are generated every 2.5 minutes on the Litecoin network compared to ten minutes for Bitcoin blocks. During the crypto peak of January 2018, LTC hit a high of $375 with a market capitalization of $17 billion.
